Icon91-year-old tells of LGBT struggles

One of Britian’s oldest lesbians will be talking next week about her experience of growing up in the days when homosexuality was a crime, as part of LGBT History month.

91-year-old Jo Monk will be among key speakers at the Past, Present and Future evening at the Council House in Plymouth on 11 February.

Monk will be giving a fascinating insight into what life was like for lesbians and gay men in the 1940s and 1950s, a period when they were persecuted, ostracised and sometimes jailed because of their sexuality.

Council leader Vivien Pengelly said: “I’m very proud of Plymouth’s rich and diverse community so I’m delighted to see these events being organised to celebrate LGBT history month. They are a chance for all of us to celebrate and be inspired by the truly groundbreaking achievements of remarkable campaigners like Jo.

“Such huge strides have been made in recent years that it’s extraordinary to think that until the 1960s gay men were treated as criminals in England, as they still are in some countries.”

Past, Present and Future starts at 6.30pm in the reception room at the Council House. Entrance is free and refreshments will be provided.

Anyone wanting to attend should contact Jill Palmer or Rhian Edwards on (01752) 304321 or e-mail rhian.edwards@plymouth.gov.uk
