IconAnne Hathaway to play Kurt’s gay aunt on Glee

A-list actress Anne Hathaway is set to guest star in the hit US series Glee, after inventing her own role in the show.

Creator Ryan Murphy broke the news after Sunday’s Golden Globe awards, where he picked up the statuette for Best Comedy Series. He told Access Hollywood, “She walked by our table and I said, ‘Do you really want to do it?’ And she said, ‘I do.’ So I said, ‘OK, we’re gonna do it!’”

His questioning was prompted by Hathaway’s recent comments to chat show host Jimmy Fallon. She revealed in November, “In my head, I’ve written a part for myself on Glee”, before elaborating, “I would want to play Kurt’s long-lost aunt, his mother’s sister who is also gay, who comes back to help him deal with his sexuality. I would sing, You Are Not Alone, a song from Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods.”

Murphy confirmed that she would take up the role she had created, adding, “because everyone needs a lesbian aunt.” He did not go into more detail, however, stating “I have to talk to Anne about what she wants to sing. I’m sure she has ideas”. He said that filming of the role would begin in six weeks time and that he was, “so excited”.

Chris Colfer, who plays Kurt, also collected an award at the ceremony, for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series. Co-star and out lesbian Jane Lynch took home the Supporting Actress prize in the same category.

The second series of Glee is currently being shown on Channel 4.
