Another Tory comment causes controversy
A week after an MEP was criticised for an offensive remark on Twitter another Tory has been forced to edit a controversial blog post.
Richard Drax, the MP for South Dorset, posted an entry on his blog which was edited soon after to remove key statements. The piece relates to the plan to include LGBT history and issues in everyday lessons such as Maths and Geography.
The initial post read, “Yes, if you can believe it, homosexuality will be on the curriculum for students studying maths, geography and science. According to the Sunday Telegraph, children as young as four could be included. Apparently, these lessons to “celebrate the gay community” are not compulsory and schools will be left to decide.
“This plan is ludicrous and pushes political correctness to new bounds. I would have thought raising educational standards and teaching our children to read, write and add up is far more important than imposing questionable sexual standards on those too young to understand their equality czars.”
The key phrase picked up immediately by the Labour opposition was “questionable sexual standards”. The title of the post was originally “Two + Two = Gay”. This has been altered to “Educating Our Children” and Drax has amended the post in order to clarify his position.
He now says, “My point was not intended to be homophobic, but sprang more from a concern that young children should not be taught a subject they simply would not understand. I believe more effort should be focused on the teaching of maths, geography and science. Currently, in international league tables, we rank 25th for literacy, 28th for maths and 16th for science. This is a lamentable state; improving it must be our priority.”
Drax has been criticised by the Labour Party gay group, LGBT Labour, for his remarks which came a week after his colleague, MEP Roger Helmer, was heavily criticised for an offensive comment on Twitter.
