IconBBC bow to pressure and prioritise women’s football over ‘Flog It!’

The BBC will show tonight’s Women’s World Cup quarter final match between England and France on BBC 2. The match was originally going to be available only online or on the red button service.

The BBC had been planning to show repeat episodes of Porridge and Flog It! on BBC 2 while the match was taking place.

Last night’s u-turn from the BBC follows pressure from the Women’s Sports and Fitness Foundation, shadow education secretary Andy Burnham and Conservative MP Tracey Crouch.

“I am delighted that the BBC has responded to the demands of its licence-fee payers and agreed to show England’s World Cup quarter-final match on one of its main channels,” said Crouch.

“This is an important step forward in advancing the appreciation of women and girls’ football, the number one female participation sport in the UK.”

Watch the Women’s World Cup quarter final match between England and France on BBC 2 at 4:45pm.
