IconBlue plaque for Peter Tatchell

On Wednesday 29 September 2010 Sir Ian McKellen will unveil a blue plaque in Southwark, London, honouring human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.

For over 40 years, Peter Tatchell has spearheaded campaigns for gay rights and human rights in Britain and across the world. He co-founded OutRage! in 1990 and twice attempted a citizen’s arrest of President Mugabe of Zimbabwe on charges of human rights abuses.

Last year Peter was named Campaigner of the Year at The Observer Ethical Awards.

Peter Tatchell has lived in Southwark for much of his life. Blue plaques are usually used to commemomorate links between deceased noted people and places significant to them.

The Lodon Borough of Southwark is unusual in that it nominates living people for the blue plaque award.
