Hilary Mantel wins Booker Prize

Wolf Hall October 7th, 2009

Sarah Waters has been denied the Man Booker Prize for the third year running.

Waters’ novel The Little Stranger was shortlisted but lost out last night to Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall.

Mantel wins £50,000 for Wolf Hall, a historical novel set in the Tudor court.

“Hilary Mantel has given us a thoroughly modern novel set in the 16th century,” commented Chair of the judges James Naughtie. “Wolf Hall has a vast narrative sweep that gleams on every page with luminous and mesmerising detail.”

Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger had been the best-selling novel before the shortlist was announced in September 09, but since then sales of Wolf Hall rose by 500% making it the best-selling novel on the shortlist.
