No lesbians in new Sarah Waters novel

Sarah Waters January 5th, 2009

Sarah Water’s latest novel, ‘The Little Stranger’, will be the first to have no lesbian characters, the author has revealed.

In an interview in The Times, Waters explained the absence of a lesbian storyline “[was] just the way the story turned out”.

Sarah Waters’ previous four novels - Tipping the Velvet, Fingersmith, Affinity and The Night Watch - have all had historical settings and involved lesbian characters.

The TV adaption of Affinity was shown on ITV over the Christmas period, and is now available to buy on DVD. The Night Watch is the Waters novel which has so far not been adapted for television.

The Little Stranger will be a ghost story set in the 1940s, and is due to be published in June 2009.

Despite the heterosexual nature of The Little Stranger, Waters has not abandoned lesbian themes completely, promising “The book after the next one, I’ll come back to a lesbian story.”
