5 reasons not to miss the York Lesbian Arts Festival
October 14th, 2008
In less than 2 weeks, thousands of queer women will descend on the unsuspecting town of York. Well, maybe not unsuspecting - the York Lesbian Arts Festival (YLAF) has been running for a number of years.
Such lesbian literary icons as Sarah Waters, Rhona Cameron and Sandi Toksvig have all graced the festival in the past, but who’s at this year’s YLAF, and why should you attend?
Ladies and gentlewomen, we hereby present to you 5 irresistible reasons to attend YLAF 2008:
1. The Book Festival
This is what YLAF is fundamentally about - thousands of books, by hundreds of queer authors, many of who are there to mingle with their fans. Read, listen, debate, buy, indulge.
2. Erin McKeown
Erin is often mentioned in the same breath as Ani DiFranco, and it’s not difficult to see why: they’ve toured together extensively, they’re close friends and they both stand up for LGBT issues. Oh, and they’re both amazing singer-songwriters. Don’t miss this chance to see this incredible queer musician in a rare UK performance.
3. 4,000 women
YLAF is Europe’s biggest lesbian event. Think of it as the thinking woman’s Pride, with books and conversation instead of glitter and ear-splitting whistles.
4. Queerlesque workshop
If burlesque is sexy, queerlesque is sexysexysexy. Think suspenders, moustaches, glamour and swagger - not necessarily all at the same time, but never say never when the workshops hosted by Club Wotever.
5. Guinevere Turner
Guinevere Turner is one of the most influential lesbians on the planet. And in the Planet, incidentally - she plays Gaby in The L Word, as well as being one of the key writers of the series. Before The L Word she was just as important in the lesbian film scene, co-writing classic queer movie Go Fish, amongst others. Quite frankly, the woman is a legend.
So are you convinced yet? Yes? Well buy your tickets from the YLAF website, and we’ll see you there!

Will Lesbilicious be at YLAF?
