54% of Californians support gay marriage
August 28th, 2008
Over half of Californians want gay marriage to remain legal in their state, according to the latest poll.
54% of likely voters in California do not want gay marriage legislation to be reversed, while 40% do want to see an end to gay marriage, according to The Associated Press.
When it comes to general attitudes about gay marriage, voters are evenly split, at 47% for and against — as they have been for the past three years.
In November, Californians will vote on Proposition 8, which, if passed, would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California.
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain has previously pledged his support for Proposition 8: “I support the efforts of the people of California to recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman, just as we did in my home state of Arizona. I do not believe judges should be making these decisions.”
However, in April, Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger pledged to fight the changes.
The Public Policy Institute began asking voters how they feel about gay marriage in 2000. That year, the poll found 55% opposed to gay marriage and 38% in favour.
