Golden Girl leaves money to LGBT youth in will
October 29th, 2009
A centre for homeless young LGBT people in New York has received a bequest of $300,000 - from former Golden Girl, the late Bea Arthur.
The Ali Forney Center was started in 2002 as a response to the lack of safe shelter for young people in New York who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The organisation plans to use the money to build transitional accommodation. The Bea Arthur Residence will house twelve young people for up to two years as they are helped to find employment, finish high school and consider higher education
Executive Director Carl Siciliano said of the bequest: “We are overwhelmed with gratitude that Bea saw that LGBT youth deserve as much love and support as any other young person, and that she placed so much value in the work we do to protect them, and to help them rebuild their lives.”
The actress, who died in April this year, had long been a supporter of LGBT rights. She is best known in the UK for her role as the acerbic Dorothy in sitcom The Golden Girls.
