70% of Scottish LGBT young people don’t feel safe in school

LGBT Youth Scotland October 15th, 2008

A new LGBT toolkit for schools in Scotland will be launched in November 2008. The toolkit, developed by LGBT Youth Scotland, is a response to recent research which found that 70% of LGBT young people in Scotland don’t feel safe in school and have experienced homophobic bullying.

The Toolkit on Guidance on Dealing with Homophobic Incidents will be formally launched during Anti-Bullying Week, taking place on 17-21 November 2008.

“Homophobic bullying is a harsh reality for many young people in our schools, impacting negatively on their wellbeing and access to education,” said an Education spokesperson from LGBT Youth Scotland.

“Teachers have identified that they need specific resources to be an effective part in stopping such unacceptable behaviour. This resource will provide them with the tools they need to help make Scottish schools a safer place for all young people.”

  • Well done to LGBT Youth Scotland for getting this very worthwhile project off the ground. How many schools have signed up to use the toolkit?

  • Hi Jane

Huge thanks for your message. Great to know that there’s such support behind the project.

The Toolkit will be launched in November 2008, so we will (at that point) be working directly with schools in supporting them to use the Toolkit.

We’ll have more information at that point - but the Toolkit is being sent to every school in Scotland, in partnership with Learning Teaching Scotland.

    All best, Inga
