‘8 Against 8′ fighting for gay marriage in California
October 21st, 2008
8 prominent lesbian bloggers are trying to raise $8,000 in 8 days to fight Proposition 8, the bill which could make gay marriage illegal once again in California.
The bloggers will donate the money they raise to Equality California, which has currently raised over $24 million to fight Prop 8. Supporters of Prop 8 have so far raised nearly $27 million.
“The rule of the game, sadly, is that the people with the biggest chunk of change have the upper hand,” explains one of the 8 Against 8 bloggers, Grace Chu. “This is because they can buy more advertisements to reach more people with their message.”
The supporters of Prop 8 have recently been criticised for their TV adverts, in which they claim that without the ban, churches could lose their tax exemption and gay marriage will be taught in public schools - both of which are false claims.
“No church is at any risk of losing its tax-exempt status if it refuses to perform same-sex weddings,” Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the law school at the University of California-Irvine told The Mercury News. And while local school boards could add marriage classes to their curriculums, there would be no statewide mandate to do so.
“Gay marriage has been legal here in sunny California since June,” adds another of the bloggers, Dorothy Snarker. “And, as far as I can tell, the very fabric of our existence has not been torn asunder.”
“Heterosexual couples have not seen the foundations of their marriages crumble into dust. Churches have not burst into flames in the fiery clutches of Beelzebub. Nothing remotely close. Pretty much, nothing has happened except that a bunch of happy, loving, grateful gay folks got to exchange rings and feed each other cake.”

The vote on Prop 8 takes place on 4 November 08. At time of writing, and just one day into the 8 days of campaigning, the 8 Against 8 have raised $2,789.
