Advertisers flee Daily Mail in Jan Moir controversy

Jan Moir article October 16th, 2009

The Daily Mail page featuring Jan Moir’s homophobic rant about Stephen Gately’s death has lost almost all its adverts as advertisers seek to distance themselves from the controversy.

Thousands of people have been complaining about the newspaper’s article, written by Jan Moir, which implies that Stephen Gately’s sexuality was somehow responsible for his death.

BT, M&S and Visit England seem to have bowed to pressure from a Twitter campaign and pulled their adverts from the page. There are now large gaps where the adverts had been.

  • The Daily Mail in general is a loathsom hate rag, doing nothing but feeding the petty minded intolerances of middle england. All advertisers should take a good hard look at why they are taking out ad space in this paper. It should be called ‘The Hate Mail’!
