Amy Lamé made Mayoress of Camden

Comedienne and broadcaster Amy Lamé has been named mayoress of the London Borough of Camden by incoming mayor Jonathan Simpson, the first openly gay holder of the position.

Former Stonewall board member and Labour councillor Simpson was officially confirmed in the role last week, at a ceremony in Camden Town Hall. He has pledged to maintain the “rock ‘n’ roll” heritage of the Borough and has chosen the Roundhouse Trust, dedicated to making the arts more accessible to local youth, as his official charity. Simpson will also donate any earnings from the official role to supporting young musicians.

Self-styled “chubby glamour-puss” and out lesbian Lamé, the popular hostess and co-founder of alternative London club Duckie, was hand selected by Simpson as his counterpart. Lamé told the Camden New Journal, “I nearly fainted when Jonathan asked me to be his mayoress. It will be an absolute honour. We’ve been friends for 15 years. All my early clubbing days were in Camden Town – most of all the Black Cap.”

The party that followed the ceremony was in tune with the musical promises made by the new mayor. Roundhouse youth musicians Maya Talwatte and Bangla Shur performed to a packed house before the London Gay Men’s Chorus closed the party.

The Camden appointments follow news that a 23-year-old gay man has become Britain’s youngest mayor. Ian Campbell was elected mayor of Retford, Nottinghamshire, last month after recently winning the council seat for Bassetlaw district. Campbell was named Nottingham’s Young Person of the Year in 2009, becoming well known for his anti-homophobic bullying activism. He told the Retford Times: “Everything has come along so quickly. It’s astonishing”.
