Australia aims for illegal gay wedding record
June 17th, 2009 by Rosie
Gay rights campaigners in Australia are planning the world’s largest illegal same-sex wedding ceremony.
The group Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH) hope over 400 couples will take part in the ceremony on 1 August 2009 as a way of protesting for marriage equality.
Same-sex marriage is not currently legal in Australia.
1 August coincides with Australia’s Labour party conference, and organisers hope the mass wedding will stress the importance of the issue to politicians.
“This really could be a turning point, I think, if we get a lot of ground support,” said CAAH spokesperson Simon Margan.
“We’ve got a lot of support from queer Labor groups so far who are keen to push this issue.
“It’s pivotal this year that we get as many people as possible to show their support, because if we all just stay home and don’t be a part of it, we’ll be doing ourselves a disservice.”
