Australian PM against gay marriage

Julia Gillard, Australia’s first female Prime Minister, has stated that “marriage is between a man and a woman” and that she does not plan to alter her country’s laws.
Ms Gillard, who was sworn in last week, made her comments on national radio yesterday. Gillard, who has attracted media attention for her single status, atheism and feminist politics, stated that she was satisfied with her government’s policies “to equalise treatment for gay couples.” Her views have provoked outcry within the lesbian and gay community who believe that she was trying to mollify her more conservative opponents.
However Education Minister Andrew Barr, the only openly gay member of the Cabinet, said that his previous dealings with Gillard showed her to be “more open to hearing arguments” than her predecessor Kevin Rudd, and that he hoped the issue would be revisited at a later date.

Seems to me that she,s hiding from her own sexual preference…. still single hmmmm… she wahts to come into the 21st century along with the rest of the poloticians who appose Gay and Lesbian marriage. Stop living in the stone ages
Tina Loveday ∼ July 1st, 2010 11:22 amWhy is OK to be legally recognised when it’s financially beneficial for the government such as same sex couples receiving Centrelink benefits?
Jay ∼ July 4th, 2010 10:23 amI think one of the big problems is the language being used…’marriage’. People are getting hung up on that one word. Maybe ‘legal union’ or something similar would be less offensive to all those traditionalists and religious people against gay marriage.
But why shouldn’t we use the word marriage? There are plenty of religious gay people who would like their relationship recognised by their church.
