Big gay greek wedding

A loophole in Greek marriage law will be tested this week by a lesbian couple desperate to wed.

LGBT rights group OLKE discovered that a 26-year old update of the Greek civil marriage law refers only to participating ‘persons’ rather than a man and a woman.

The wedding will take place in the Athens suburb of Kessariani by the district’s liberal mayor Spyros Tzokas. “I have no objection to celebrating this union so long as the law is respected,” said the mayor.

The couple face another hurdle before they are legally wed, however - the Greek government must register the marriage. OLKE had informed the Justice Ministry, but it has not commented.

The Greek government is planning to introduce civil partnership legislation later this year granting legal rights to unmarried couples; however it has not said whether these rights will include same-sex couples.

  • ooh, how excellent! I hope they don’t need to include same-sex couples in any not-actually-marriage legislation…
