California approves gay marriage
May 19th, 2008
Congratulations Californians! The California Supreme Court has declared that same-sex couples in the state can legally marry.
The California Supreme Court ruled 4 to 3 that refusing to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry is a violation of the state’s constitution.
While making the historic judgment, the chief justice said: “In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual’s capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual’s sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual’s sexual orientation — like a person’s race or gender — does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights.”
California has an estimated 92,000 same-sex couples. Within hours of the announcement, couples had already started queueing at San Francisco City Hall to make appointments to get marriage licenses.
Massachusetts is the only other US state to legalise gay marriage.
Predicatbly, conservative groups unhappy with the change in law, and they are pushing for a constitutional amendment which might see the decision reversed in November. Hopefully they’ll be as reactionary and ill-informed as ‘The Peter‘…
