Cameron promises tax breaks for civil partners

David Cameron has pledged tax breaks for civil partners. January 14th, 2010

Conservative leader David Cameron has said that he will give civil partners the same tax benefits as married couples.

Married couples are currently penalised by the tax system, meaning that they would be financially better off if they were to split. However, Cameron has pledged to change the tax system in order to benefit those in relationships recognised by the state.

“We will recognise marriage, whether between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman or a man and a man, in the tax system – and yes, that is a commitment,” he said during a speech at think-tank Demos.

Cameron recently admitted that he “messed up” over the pro-marriage tax reforms, following an interview in which he said he merely “hoped” to implement the reforms, after promising that he would.

However, he has since stated that he will bring in the reforms during the next Parliament if the Conservatives win the forthcoming General Election.
