Civil partnerships down 18%

The number of civil partnerships in the UK fell by almost a fifth in 2008.

7,169 same-sex couples registered as civil partners in 2008, compared to 8,728 in 2007.

According to the Office for National Statistics the number of civil partnerships fell by 17% in England and Wales, by 24% in Scotland and by 23% in Northern Ireland.

53% of the couples to have civil partnershiips in 2008 were male.

180 couples formally dissolved their partnerships in 2008. 64% of those civil partnership dissolutions were female couples.

London remains the most popular place in the UK to have a civil partnership, followed by Brighton.

A total of 33,956 civil partnerships have been formed in the UK since
the Civil Partnership Act came into force in December 2005.
