25,000 complaints but Moir refuses to apologise over Stephen Gately article

The Press Complaints Commission is considering an investigation following a record number of complaints after journalist Jan Moir linked the death of gay musician Stephen Gately with what she termed his “difficult and dangerous lifestyle” in a Daily Mail article.

To date, complaints to the PCC have topped 25,000. The PCC has had more complaints over one weekend than it has received in the past five years.

Although the PCC rarely investigate third-party complaints and are waiting for Gately’s family to lodge a formal complaint, they have stated that they will contact the Mail “for its response to the more general complaints from the public before considering whether there are any issues…to pursue”.

In the statement released after the controversy hit the airwaves, Moir described it as “a heavily orchestrated internet campaign” referring to the outcry on social networking site Twitter.

Although the Mail has not published either a retraction or a formal apology for the article, it did run a piece by former Independent editor Janet Street-Porter who questioned whether Gately’s death was “really any of our business” and stated that she would like to see greater attention focussed on homophobic attacks.
