Election of lesbian bishop ‘raises serious questions’ – Archbishop of Canterbury

Mary Glasspool December 7th, 2009

Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams yesterday called on Anglicans in the USA to block the appointment of a lesbian bishop.

Canon Mary Glasspool has been chosen to be an assistant bishop in Los Angeles. Glasspool, who is 55, has lived with her partner Becki Sander for 21 years.

Dr Williams believes that the election of Mary Glasspool may prove to be a catalyst for the schism that is threatening the Anglican faith.

In a statement, Dr Williams said that Glasspool’s election raised “very serious questions” for the Episcopal Church and its place in the Anglican Communion, and reminded US bishops that the election could still be blocked by diocesan bishops.

The Episcopal Church is the US branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

Glasspool is the first openly lesbian woman to be elected as a bishop. The only other out gay bishop is the Right Reverend Gene Robinson, Bishop of New Hampshire.

In August 2008, the Archbishop of Canterbury blamed North American churches for creating turmoil in the Anglican church by blessing same-sex unions and consecrating gay clergy.
