First gay marriage in Portugal
June 11th, 2010 by Martina.Booth
A lesbian couple have become to first same-sex couple to get married in Portugal, a month after a law allowing gay marriage came into effect.
Teresa Pires, 33, and Helena Paixao, 40, married in Lisbon earlier this week in front of 30 guests.
The couple, who are both divorced mothers, have been together since 2003. They described their marriage as a “great victory, a dream come true”.
Portugal is the sixth European country to recognise same-sex marriage, joining Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Norway.
