Free LGBT legal advice every month
November 14th, 2008
A London university today (14 November 2008) launches a specialist ‘Pink Law’ Legal Advice Centre which will offer free and impartial advice on LGBT-specific issues such as employment discrimination, civil partnerships and cohabitation.
Law students from Queen Mary, University of London will be offering advice under the supervision of three top City law firms. The centre will be open from 6pm to 8.30pm on the last Wednesday of every month.
The Pink Law Legal Advice Service opens during National Pro Bono Week. The opening will be attended by Mr Justice Fulford (pictured) a leading High Court and International Criminal Court judge. Strongly committed to human rights, Sir Adrian Fulford is also the country’s first opening gay judge.
The pro bono ethos – which literally means ‘for the public good’ – is to ensure access to justice for all. Recent projects from the Queen Mary Student Pro Bono Group include ‘StreetLaw’, working with a local homeless shelter in Whitechapel and a schools project which makes children aware of their rights.
Helen Ward, Information Officer for equality and justice campaign group Stonewall supports the project. “Stonewall receives many calls to our information service from lesbian, gay and bisexual people who need legal advice and assistance.
“It’s encouraging that Queen Mary University is offering a free legal service to ensure that LGB people can access the help they need when dealing with discrimination.”
