Gay museum to open in 2011

Gay museum October 16th, 2008

The UK’s first ever gay museum is set to open in 3 years’ time.

Proud Heritage will display objects that help tell the story of gay history, such the door to Oscar Wilde’s jail cell and a hand-embroidered Gay Love jumpsuit worn by artist Alan Wakeman in the 1972 Pride March.

The museum will also display a 1950s map of gay locations, drawn on several separate layers of tissue paper. The papers had to be combined to reveal the secret locations, as homosexuality was still illegal at that time.

Proud Heritage is currently operating as a website and building the collection, which will eventually be displayed in a £10m museum at London’s King’s Cross.
