Gay pride group offers to pay ‘South Carolina is so gay’ $5000 debt
July 21st, 2008
In a hilarious twist on the ‘South Carolina is so gay‘ story, the South Carolina Gay and Lesbian Pride Movement has decided to raise the $5000 needed to pay the debt the state owes a London marketing company.
Last week we reported that politicians in the southern US state were appalled that South Carolina was named as a gay-friendly destination on a London advertising campaign. The South Carolina tourist board employee responsible for agreeing the campaign has since resigned, and the tourist board is refusing to pay the $5000 agreed to appear in the adverts.
However, the Board of the SC Pride Movement has decided to step in to save the state’s honour.
As Board member Bruce Converse explained, “unfortunately, South Carolina has sent a message to the world, that a signed contract from any state agency could be nullified if someone says, ‘Oops, we made a mistake in signing this contract’. In other words, the ‘word’ of South Carolina can’t be trusted. We believe it is the right thing to do, to repay this debt.”
Ryan Wilson, President of SC Pride added: “South Carolina may not be ’so gay’currently but we are going to show the world that we can be and we WILL BE so gay, and gay friendly some day!”
The SC Pride Movement is accepting donations to the fund via its website.

haha, that’s excellent! Can I start a ‘South Wales is *so* gay’ campaign?
