Gay pride U-turn for Doncaster mayor
June 14th, 2009
Doncaster’s newly elected mayor has announced that he won’t carry out his threat to withold funding for the town’s gay pride.
Doncaster council will now honour the £3,000 commitment it had made to Doncaster Pride.
Last week Doncaster Mayor Peter Davies had announced he would be slashing the gay pride budget as part of a move to combat ‘political correctness’.
“My policy on gays and lesbians is very simple,” said Mr Davies, one day after being elected Mayor. “I don’t think councils should be spending money on them parading through town advertising their sexuality.”
8,000 people attended Doncaster Pride in 2008.
The BBC reports that Mr Davies has now made a u-turn, and the event will receive the funding.
In a statement issued through Doncaster Council, Mr Davies said: “The Gay Pride event has been planned for some time and the funding already committed.
“In the circumstances, I believe I should honour this commitment and the event will go ahead. I will continue to work with the Pride Committee.”
Doncaster Pride will take place on 16 August.

Sounds like someone sat him down and explained what a schmuck he was making of himself. I hope he has learned from the experience.
