Gay students forced to sign prom ‘contracts’

Gay students in some New Zealand schools have been banned from taking their same-sex partner to the prom unless they sign a form declaring they are homosexual.

Some schools have introduced the contracts to try to prevent students from taking same-sex friends. However, many students, both gay and straight, see it as direct discrimination.

16-year-old student Joshua Wright is one such student who disagrees with the policy: “If (the school) ask me to sign a contract, I’m going to say `no’ and just go anyway. ”

Serafin Dillonfrom the New Zealand support group Rainbow Youth said she knew of at least four schools that had presented students with such contracts, and that the policies breached New Zealand’s Bill Of Rights.

Dillon told newspaper the Dominion Post “If this was in the workplace it would be discrimination and it would be unheard of. But because it’s a school they think they can somehow get away with it.”
