‘God Hates Fags’ church to picket lesbian student’s prom

Constance McMillen April 29th, 2010 by Martina.Booth

The Westboro Baptist Church - notorious for its ‘God Hates Fags’ protests - has announced it will picket the graduation of Constance McMillen, who was prevented from attending her school prom with her girlfriend.

In a press release, the Kansas-based church said: “[We] will picket the graduation of Itawamba Agricultural High School to remind the parents, teachers and students of this nation that God said ‘Thou shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind, it is abomination’.

“This generation has been raised to believe that they can live for the devil and still go to heaven, that God has no standards and the biggest lie of all – that God loves everyone.”

Earlier this year Ms McMillen’s prom in Mississippi was cancelled after she asked school officials if she could take a female date. She is currently suing the school for damages.

The Westboro Baptist Church is currently being sued by Albert Snyder after it picketed the funeral of his marine son Matthew -who was killed in Iraq in 2006 - with banners including ‘God Hates Fags’ and ‘Thank God for Dead Soldiers’.

The chuch regularly pickets the funerals of dead soldiers, claiming their deaths are God’s revenge against America for its tolerance of homosexuality.

  • What on Earth!
    This is so frustrating!!!
    Picketing at a funeral…
When I read the opening I was furious enough at the thought of a church picketing at a girl’s grad. never mind being actually ALLOWED to do as such! Isn’t this assault under US law? I’m in Ireland, so don’t know myself, but really.
    Argh!
    Really!?
I can’t believe the injustice here. I’ve my grad. in a couple of weeks…
Imagine going into the school hall with your parents and peers bombarded by picketers. In my experience gays have been incredibly tolerant of the various religions which strike against them. Why can’t these organizations return the acceptance? Not even acceptance, though in an ideal world, tolerance even.
Ha, I’m hesitating why I’ve written this comment, sounds like I’m campaigning in all futility. But man, it’s not much to ask. it really isn’t.

  • I know what you mean Zea, I’m in a similar position, slowly opening up to people, but still. People can be pretty conservative here, out in the country…
    Thailand, eh?
It’s brilliant that you’ve found this website, it’s very open and relaxed; a great forum for debate.
I’m sorry to hear that you can’t be out to the people in your life. That must be really frustrating. Mind me asking if you’re still at school? I’m in my last year. Ha, I know what you mean about the boredom… You just need to put yourself out there; join clubs, societies etc…
I hope things work out for ya!
    Soph.
