Hasta la vista, gay marriage ban proposals
April 16th, 2008
Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he said he will fight an initiative to change the California Constitution so that it bans same-sex marriage.
The proposed initiatives would limit marriage to heterosexuals, and one measure would revoke the spousal rights and tax benefits currently extended to same-sex couples under state laws.
Geoffrey Kors, executive director of the gay rights group Equality California, said Schwarzenegger’s opposition could help defeat a marriage ban or even prevent it from getting enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
“We were thrilled. We have been asking him to do this,” said Kors. “This is extremely significant, and it’s an enormous event to have our Republican governor come out against this ballot measure, which is opposed by Democrats as well. His opposition to the constitutional amendment now in circulation adds to his record of supporting many LGBT issues, including signing at least 20 bills during his time in office.”
