Hawaii considers same-sex marriage bill

Hawaii could be the next US state to legalise same-sex marriage, when legislators meet on 20 January to consider a civil union bill granting the same rights as marriage to lesbian and gay couples.

If House Bill 444 is passed, it will mean that unmarried couples, both LGBT and heterosexual, would receive the same legal rights as married ones. The Senate’s description states that the bill “extends the same rights, benefits, protections and responsibilities of spouses in a marriage to partners in a civil union.”
The bill was originally proposed last May and gained preliminary approval, before stalling before law-makers after concerted lobbying by opposition. On Sunday 16 January, a rally against same-sex marriage sponsored by Hawai’i Family Forum attracted thousands of protestors to the capital, Honolulu. Those against the bill are confident that it will not be passed. Garret Hashimoto, chair of the Hawaii Christian Coalition, told the Honolulu Star Bulletin: “The polls show that the people don’t want it. This civil unions bill is too close to being a same-sex marriage bill.”

However, a spokesman for Equality Hawaii said he believes that the bill will get through the senate. “This bill has already been voted on, so there isn’t as much convincing to do anymore,” says Alan Spector. ”I think (legislators) get the substance of the bill and the need for the bill.”

  • It should go without saying that a person should be allowed to marry whomever they choose. Until the right-wing, religious fanatics in this country stop trying to control everybody else and force their “morals” down the throat of the country, there can be no real freedom in the United States. Civil rights cannot simply be “voted away,” that is the purpose of the Bill of Rights. Religious activists should be left out of these decisions completely. I invite you to my web pages devoted to raising awareness on this puritan attack on our freedom: http://freethegods.blogspot.com/2009/06/san-franciscos-gay-pride-parade.html

  • I believe that anyone should have that right to get married as long as they are happily in love. If two people share the loving bond as any other, then why not!
