High school prom’s ban on lesbian overturned
November 13th, 2009
An Alabama high school who cancelled their prom after a lesbian member of the planning committee asked to bring her girlfriend has reconsidered - and 17 year old Cynthia Stewart will be allowed to bring her date.
The school was forced to back down after the American Civil Liberties Union intervened on Stewart’s behalf. The student had also been told “you don’t have many civil rights in school”, after she had refused to remove a sticker proclaiming her sexual orientation.
Tharpton High School was so determined not to allow the couple to attend, that it had cancelled the event until the ACLU asked them to reconsider. Stewart will now be allowed to bring her girlfriend, who does not attend the school, subject to the same vetting that straight students bringing out-of-town undergo.
Stewart, who had personally raised over $200 for the event, has expressed her disappointment at her school: “All I want is to be able to be myself and go to my prom with the person I love, just like any other student wants to do.”

Why on earth does the house of lords, whom non of us elected, have power over the house of commons who (in theory) are the elected representative of the people?! Absurd!
Bex ∼ November 13th, 2009 3:42 pmI really admire Cynthia Stewart, she’s making it easier for every single lesbian in high school.
I came out late (40’s) but I am out publically so many women who were perhaps like me -with no role model can see that this is a lesbian : a happy successful attractive woman!
