Irish protest against Civil Partnership Bill

600 people protested in Dublin last weekend over the Irish government’s plan for an “inferior” civil partnership Bill.

A civil partnership Bill is due before the Dáil (Irish parliament) shortly which will allow lesbian and gay couples to register in civil partnerships.

However, campaigners are angry that the government has no plans to introduce same-sex marriage, which would provide more rights than civil partnerships.

“The civil partnership Bill is an inferior piece of legislation which does not recognise families or give people the right to adopt their partner’s children,” said Eloise McInerney of LGBT Noise, which organised the protest.

“We don’t want crumbs from the master’s table, we want the whole cake,” added McInerney. “We want the wedding cake.”

A report released in February 2009 found that six out of 10 people in Ireland believe that denying marriage to lesbians and gay men is a form of discrimination.
