Join queer superheroes at pro-choice London rally

July 8th, 2011

At least 700 people are expected to protest in London tomorrow (Saturday 9 July 2011) in response to the Government’s recent appointment of anti-abortion organisation Life to their sexual health forum, at the expense of the British pregnancy Advisory Service.

Anti-cuts collective Queer Resistance are calling on LGBT people and allies to join the protest dressed as superheroes, to ‘rescue choice’.

The Life organisation is opposed to abortion in all circumstances, and favours abstinence over contraception in sex education.

“Whilst Life may offer a service to those who do not see abortion as an option, we still live in a society in which women have a legal right to an abortion if that’s what they want and any step away from that endangers a woman’s right to choose what happens to her body,” says protest organiser Adele Jones.

“The right to bodily autonomy is essential for all of us - from cis-gendered women to trans, queer, intersex people and beyond,” said a spokesperson for Queer Resistance. “We need access to a healthcare system that supports and provides for us all. We cannot let Nadine Dorries, the ConDems and other villains erode our right to Choice.”

Queer Resistance are meeting at 11.30am in the Victoria Tower Gardens, to join the main protest at 1:30pm. For more information about the Queer Resistance superhero protest go to the Choice kidnapped by the Tories – Queer superheroes unite for rescue mission Facebook page.
