Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement slams ‘outrageous’ adoption ruling

The Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement (LGCM) has condemned an “outrageous” High Court decision to give a Catholic adoption agency an exemption from allowing gay parents to adopt.

Leeds-based Roman Catholic adoption agency Catholic Care was granted the exemption following an appeal, meaning it is able to continue its policy of refusing to consider gay parents as suitable adoptors.

The decision, by Mr Justice Briggs, has been widely criticised by gay campaigners.

LGCM chief executive Rev Sharon Ferguson said: “It is both unacceptable and outrageous that laws can be passed which the High Court then allows to be ignored.

“We do not doubt that Catholic Care has done good work in the past but it should only continue to do so within the current legal framework.”

She argued that the judge would not have reached the same decision if he was considering discrimination against race or physical ability.

“Children deserve the right to the very best adoptive parents and what makes a couple suitable to be parents is not their sexual orientation.,, The implications of this decision for the potential erosion of equality through the back door is extremely worrying.”

Catholic Care had threatened to give up its work placing children rather than concede to the sexual orientation legislation.

Mr Justice Briggs ordered the Charity Commission to reconsider the case in light of the judgement.

  • The Catholic Church are just proving that they don’t actually care about the welfare of children or making the world a better place; they care about gaining power and marginalizing people they don’t agree with.
