Lesbian bishop gets final approval in Los Angeles

Rev Mary Glasspool March 18th, 2010 by Martina.Booth

The US Episcopal Church has approved the election of an openly lesbian bishop in Los Angeles.

The Rev Mary Glasspool, 56, was selected by the US Anglican body last December, but her appointment was condemned by conservative Anglicans.

Rev Glasspool - who has been with her partner Becki Sander for 22 years - welcomed the news, but acknowledged that “not everybody rejoices in this election”.

“[I] will work, pray and continue to extend my own hands and heart to bridge those gaps, and strengthen the bonds of affection among all people, in the name of Jesus Christ,” she said in a statement.

Her consecration will take place on 15 May in Los Angeles.

Despite pressure from conservative Anglicans, the Episcopal Church remains committed to accepting same-sex relationships.

In 2003 it caused outrage by consecrating the first openly gay bishop in the communion, Gene Robinson. Because of death threats, he wore a bulletproof vest during his consecration.

Bishop Robinson’s ordination led to a suspension on the church consecrating out gay bishops, but this was lifted last year.
