Lesbian parents better, say scientists
June 14th, 2010
Children with lesbian parents perform better in school and have fewer behavioural problems than children of the same age of the general population, according to a new study.
The 17-year old children of lesbian mothers were rated significantly higher in social, school/academic, and total competence and significantly lower in social problems, rule-breaking, aggressive, and externalizing problem behaviour.
The study, published in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, is the largest and longest-running study of same-sex families.
154 US families have been tracked in the research from 1986 to the present day.
According to US census data, an estimated 270,313 American children were living in households headed by same-sex couples in 2005, and nearly twice that number had a single lesbian or gay parent.
