Lesbian US legislator surrogates for gay couple

A Democrat legislator in the Utah House of Representatives, Christine Johnson, is acting as surrogate mother for a gay male couple.
The politician, one of only three out lesbian or gay members of the legislature in the Mormon state, is 16 weeks pregnant with the child she is carrying on behalf of the men, whose names she will not reveal, but who are both her close friends.
Rep. Johnson, 41, who already has a teenage daughter from a previous marriage, agreed to have the baby for her friends, who were frustrated by Utah laws preventing adoption by unmarried or cohabiting couples.
The two men were married under California state law at a time when same-sex marriage was still legal. In Utah, however, their marriage is not recognised and although the partner who donated the sperm will share the same rights to his child as all biological fathers, his partner will not be allowed to adopt the baby.
Johnson herself says that, although biologically the baby’s mother, she will act as an aunt figure for her friends’ child, which is due to be born in the summer. She told local newspaper the Salt Lake Tribune: “I can very much empathize with their desire to become parents and share their lives with and open their hearts to a child. I’m immeasurably grateful to be a mother.” Of the two men, she said: “They are, in concert, just going to be perfect parents.”
