Lesbians in rural areas ‘at risk from isolation and discrimination’

July 21st, 2010 by Chloe.Setter

Gays and lesbians living in rural areas are at risk of isolation and discrimination, a new report has shown.

LGBT Diversity, a new national programme designed to support the needs of gay people,  said a significant number found it difficult to reveal their sexual orientation in their local area, thought it was difficult to integrate and were reluctant to remain in the place they were born.

Programme manager Derek McDonnell told the Press Association that mainstream services cannot provide proper support, leading to profound isolation and a heightened risk of mental health problems.
