‘Liberal US to blame for Anglican rift’
August 4th, 2008 by Rosie
Liberal North American churches are to blame for the current turmoil in the Anglican church by blessing same-sex unions and consecrating gay clergy, according to The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.
Speaking this weekend at the 10-yearly gathering of Anglican bishops from across the world, Williams said: “If the North American churches don’t accept the need for moratoria, then, to say the least, we are no further forward.”
“The idea of a covenant which includes as many [national Anglican Churches] as possible becomes more fragile and that means as a communion we continue to be in grave peril.”
At the last Lambeth Conference , a resolution was agreed stating that homosexuality goes against the Bible’s teaching. But since then, the American church elected an openly gay bishop and the church in Canada ruled that same-sex unions could be blessed publicly.
About 200 (one in four) bishops refused to attend the 2008 conference in protest at the presence of the liberal Americans.
