London Pride 2009 - Lesbilicious highlights
July 7th, 2009
What a weekend. How I managed to bump into people I know at London Pride is beyond me. Like accidentally coming across needles in a haystack. Yet when I needed to find someone…impossible. There were “hundreds of thousands” of people in London this weekend for the controversially themed ‘Come Out and Play’. Rosie Kirk shares some Lesbilicious highlights of London Pride 2009.
Pride Reception at 10 Downing Street
Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, held the very first Pride reception at Downing Street. Peter Tatchell wasn’t invited but the event was supposedly meant for people who were involved in organising Pride. Hence me eating a bagel at a mates flat at that point.
The Parade
The Parade went all out with the theme this year. It was colourful, diverse, and a little bit political - although some would argue not enough. The great thing about the London Pride parade is that you can join it - and everyone does - including Gordon’s missus, Sarah Brown!
Christian Voice picket
Christian Voice picket London Pride every year. The size of their picket is small enough to be amused but big enough to feel justified in marching through London. Thanks for the reminder guys.
Gay Icons exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery
Slightly misleading title for the exhibition - probably should have been ‘Icons (who aren’t necessarily gay) of Gay Icons’. On the whole though, a great exhibition. Jackie Kay’s selection was particularly touching. The exhibition runs until 18th October 2009.
Gay Shame Goes Girly
Obviously, I couldn’t be in two places at one time, but I am pretty sure I was at the best event in London on the Saturday night. Gay Shame was hosted by Amy Lame and attracted 3000 people to see 35 side shows and 100 artists. I got the opportunity to paint a random woman’s vagina. According to the Duckie website this was the last ever Gay Shame. Now that is a gay shame.
