Maine rejects gay marriage

Maine November 4th, 2009

Voters in the US state of Maine have repealed a state law that would have allowed same-sex couples to marry.
With 87% of precincts reporting, gay-marriage opponents had 53% of the vote last night.

“The institution of marriage has been preserved in Maine and across the nation,” said Frank Schubert, the chief organiser for Stand for Marriage Maine, which lobbied for the repeal.

Five US states have legalised gay marriage: Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut. Four of the five states are in the northeast of the United States.

All the states which have legalised gay marriage have done so through legislature or judicial action. Every state that has put the issue to a public vote has resulted in a rejection of same-sex marriage.
