Portugal rejects gay marriage
October 14th, 2008
Portugal’s parliament has rejected proposals to allow same-sex marriages.
The proposals came from two minor opposition parties, the Left Bloc and the Green Party, which argued that the Portuguese Constitution grants equal rights for all and protection against discrimination.
However, the governing Socialist Party and the main opposition Social Democratic Party both opposed legalising gay and lesbian marriages.
Gay marriage is currently legal in only three European Union countries: Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.
