Pro-gay tshirt pulled from US shop chain

Trendy US retailer Urban Outfitters has removed a tshirt supporting gay marriage from its shelves.

The tshirt, which reads ‘I support same sex marriage’ was only on sale for one week before the clothing company pulled the shirts, blaming “too much bad press” - which appears to consist of criticism from one small anti-gay blog.

“With the news of the approval of Prop 8 in California it has become clear that these shirts deserve a place,” says Tara Littman, the designer who created the tshirt image. “People need to hear this story and those who do support same sex marriage need to be proud of it and not be afraid to wear it on their sleeve.

“Our country needs these shirts more than ever, and I’m sorry that Urban Outfitters is too conservative or too scared to give this worthy cause a voice.”

Urban Outfitters chairman Richard Hayne has donated thousands of dollars to right-wing causes, including the campaigns of homophobic former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum.

When asked for views on homosexuality in 2003, Hayne told the Philadelphia Weekly, “I have my own opinion, but I am not going to share it.”

The ‘I support same sex marriage’ tshirt will soon be available for sale directly from the designers’ website Support Shirts.
