Protest against Argentinian same-sex marriage bill
July 14th, 2010 by Martina.Booth
Thousands of demonstrators have protested against plans to legalise same-sex marriage in Argentina.
Demonstrators gathered outside Argentina’s congress in Buenos Aires after the House of Deputies approved same-sex marriage and sent the legislation to the Senate for consideration today.
The legislation, which would also allow same-sex couples to adopt, has been strongly opposed by the Roman Catholic Church and other religious groups.
The protest’s main slogan was “the children have a right to a mother and a father”.
President Cristina Fernandez has said she will not to veto the measure if it reaches her desk.
Gay couples can currently have a civil union in Buenos Aires and some other provinces, but there is no law which regulates it on a country-wide level.
