Queen of Spain complains about gay rights
November 3rd, 2008
Queen Sofia of Spain has sparked anger and dismay in Spanish gay rights groups with a series of comments about homosexuality.
In a new biography, Queen Sofia said: “I can understand, accept and respect that there are people with other sexual tendencies, but should they be proud to be gays? Should they ride on a parade float and come out in protests? If all of those of us who aren’t gay came out to protest we would jam traffic.
“If these people want to live together, dress as bride and groom and get married that is their right, or not, according to the law of the country: but that shouldn’t be called marriage, because that’s not what it is. There are a lot of possible names: social contract, social union.”
The biography, called The Queen Up Close, is based on 15 interviews with the queen by journalist Pilar Urbano.
Antonio Poveda, head of gay rights group FELGTB (the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals) has called for the Palace to retract the comments. Poveda has expressed his “tremendous surprise” at the comments, give that the Palace, “which represents all citizens, should question the rights of one section of society.”
Poveda added, “Many mothers of gays and lesbians are going to ask why the Queen understands that the Prince would marry a divorced woman, but she can’t understand why other mothers wouldn’t want that same happiness of marriage for their children, regardless of who they marry.”
Gaspar Llamazares, spokesperson of political party the United Left, commented: “Luckily, in Spain the King reigns but doesn’t govern, and neither does the Queen.”

Yet another set of comments borne out of ignorance and self righteousness well Queen Sofia who cares what you think anyway? Come into a world where people hate, judge and discriminate; experience it or even find out about what it must feel like to be treated so terribly because of the way you were born to live your life( let’s not get caught up in the argument of how we came to be gay)AND THEN
………..got cut short then…continued…
and then Queen Sofia rant on about wanting to be proud of who you are and want to have your love recognised as legitimate and valued as it should be in a land of true equality! Tut Tut! Should we really be accepting these hight and mighty opinions so easily? Iris Robinson all over again.
