Religious gay communities welcomed at London Pride

Despite a small number of Christian protesters, there was a strong faith group presence at London Pride this year.

Leaders from LGBT religious groups spoke to Pink News during the festival, with the message that “you can love your religion and your sexuality”, as Ben Kaye of Gay Jews in London put it.

The likelihood of a reconciliation between gay rights campaigners and religious groups increased when Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone said that the Government would consider religious marriage ceremonies for lesbian and gay couples, and London Mayor Boris Johnson said that he supported the idea.

Tensions had been present between the LGBT and faith communities earlier in the week, after club owner Mark Ames posted derogatory comments about Muslims on his Facebook page. Ames’ comments were criticised by leaders of both communities, and the parade promoted inclusivity from a number of groups, including Muslim gay rights group Imaan.
