Scottish adoption agency speaks out for gay parents

The Scottish Adoption Association has called upon same-sex couples not to be discouraged from starting a family. Chief Executive Margaret Moyes asked the lesbian and gay to ignore the negative publicity stirred up by tabloid magazines, insisting that she wants “a significant increase in gay adopters”.
“I am really keen to make sure we get the message out that there are lots of children waiting for adoption, and we need to find parents from as wide a group of people as possible,” she said. The agency, who have arranged over 3,000 successful adoptions, referred to the campaign run by the Daily Mail to prevent a gay couple in Edinburgh adopting two children placed with a gay couple after their grandparents complained as “horrible publicity” and insisted that it did not reflect their practices.
Andy Mcleary, Director of New Family Social, a charity supporting LGB adopters, agreed: “I hope that gay men and lesbians in Scotland who would like to adopt feel able to come forward. The change in Scottish law allowing same-sex couples to adopt jointly came into effect more recently and I’m glad agencies are already so welcoming of prospective LGBT adopters.”
