Second homophobic attack at World Outgames

Athletes July 31st, 2009

A man has been arrested after throwing fireworks at athletes during the World Outgames in Copenhagen.

Two explosive objects were thrown onto the men’s 4×200 meter relay race on Tuesday. The objects were later identified as fireworks, but witnesses originally believed them to be bombs.

One athlete was taken to hospital with injuries to his hand from flying shrapnel.

Police have arrested a 31-year-old Danish man.

This is the second incident of suspected homophobic violence after the Outgames. At the opening-night ceremonies three men were hospitalised after being attacked by men shouting homophobic slurs.

The Federation of Gay Games has condemned the attacks. “Copenhagen has a reputation as one of the most LGBT friendly places on earth,” said the Federation in a statement.

“Even there, we are reminded that our community still faces those that would deny us our basic human rights, even the freedom to run in a track meet in safety.

“But we will not be discouraged; rather, we will run, swim, jump, throw, grapple, volley and perform at events like the Gay Games and OutGames, celebrating our right to love who we want.”
