“South Carolina is so gay” adverts spark anger

July 17th, 2008

Posters in London’s Tube network proclaiming ‘South Carolina is so gay’ have infuriated politicians in the conservative US state.

The advertising campaign for gay travel agency Amro was displayed in the run up to London’s Gay Pride on the Tube network, and mentioned various gay-friendly destinations in the US, including Las Vegas, New Orleans and Washington DC.

The posters have horrified Republican state senator David Thomas,  who has demanded an audit of the tourism department’s advertising spending. “South Carolinians will be irate when they learn their hard-earned tax dollars are being spent to advertise our state as ’so gay’,” said Mr Thomas in a statement.

The company behind the adverts claim that South Carolina specifically asked to be part of the campaign, and the tourist department even hosted a visit from the CEO of  Amro so he could check there were enough gay-friendly attractions in the area.

However, the South Carolina tourist board is now refusing to pay the $5000 (£2,500) fee for appearing in the campaign, and the person responsible for the deal has resigned.

A spokesman for Gov. Mark Sanford, who has been mentioned as a possible running mate for the Republican presidential nominee John McCain, said the governor agreed that the posters were “inappropriate.”
